A Healthy School strives to build an environment that supports lifelong health and wellbeing of the school community. Student and staff wellbeing is an important precondition for learning! A Healthy School approach can foster student and staff success in your school. Healthy Schools is an internationally recognized and evidence informed approach to enhance the health and wellbeing of school communities.

A healthy school environment is essential for student success. Healthy students are better learners! (Health Canada)

The heathy school approach is where the whole school community comes together to share ideas, plan, and take action to help kids lead healthy and active lives (OPHEA, 2015).

A Healthy School Approach

Taking all of these five, interconnected areas into account will help schools, school boards, parents and community partners to work together to develop a comprehensive approach to healthy school policies, programs and initiatives.

Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning	Curriculum, teaching and learning is an area that offers a wide range of opportunities for students to learn, practice and promote positive and healthy behaviours, and to practice how to lead healthy, active lives.
Student Engagment	Student engagement refers to the extent to which students identify with and value their learning; feel a sense of belonging at school; and are informed about, engaged with and empowered to participate in and lead academic and non-academic activities.
Social and Physical Environment	The social environment is: The quality of the relationships among and between staff and students in the school. The emotional well-being of students. Influenced by relationships with families and the wider community Supportive of the school community in making healthy choices by building competence, autonomy, and connectedness. The physical environment is: The buildings, grounds, play space, and equipment in and surrounding the school. Basic amenities such as sanitation, air cleanliness, and healthy foods Spaces designed to promote student safety and connectedness and minimize injury Safe, accessible, and supportive of healthy choices for all members of the school community.
Home, School, and Community Partnerships	Home, school and community partnerships engage parents (guardians and caregivers) extended family, school staff, child care and family support programs and community groups in a mutually beneficial way to support, enhance and promote opportunities for learning and well-being.
School & Classroom Leadership	Creating a positive classroom and school environment by identifying shared goals and priorities that are responsive to the needs of the school community. Collecting data to help identify priority areas. Identifying and establishing realistic goals related to student and staff well-being through school improvement planning, establishing a collaborative learning culture in the school, developing, implementing and monitoring policies, programming and procedures related to healthy schools Healthy School Policies: management practices, decision-making processes, rules, procedures, policies, and guidelines at all levels that promote student wellness and achievement, and shape a respectful, welcoming, and caring school environment for all members of the school community.

These five interconnected areas of school health align with the key components of the Ministry of Education's Foundations for a Healthy School and the Joint Consortium for School Health’s Components of Comprehensive School Health.

5-Step Healthy Schools Process

Step 1: Establish Healthy Schools Committee

A Healthy Schools Committee can be the leader of change within their school. If members of your group are concerned about your school’s health, others are too. Start by forming a committee that will create better school conditions or find a group or club that is already working on identified health issues.

Step 2: Identify Your School Community Priorities, Strengths, and Needs

Determine the needs, interests and health of students and staff. Try to identify your school’s strengths and needs by completing a needs assessment and then set goals to build a healthier school.

Step 3: Create and Implement Action Plan

Once your committee has identified the health issues or potential concerns for your school, develop an action plan. A plan may include:

Develop SMART goal – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-related. (e.g. to create a bully-free environment in our school within the next 2 years)
Establish some objectives and actions required to achieve your goal. (e.g. Objective #1: Lower the incidence of bullying by 15% by year end)
Determine what activities need to take place to meet your goal. (e.g. workshops for staff, parents and students to educate them about ways to combat bullying at school)
Identify a leader to ensure each objective is met. Delegate roles and responsibilities to committee members and recruit additional support as needed.
Determine which component(s) of Comprehensive School Health this objective meets, and the pertinent links to the curriculum.
Know what is needed to make it happen and how can the goal be sustained.
Develop a proposed timeline. Be prepared to adjust the timeline as needed.
Consider how you are going to let the rest of the school community know what you are doing any why.

Step 4: Monitor Progress

How will you measure your success? (How will you know if your project has made a difference? What changes will you see, hear and/or feel in your classroom, school and/or community?):

Consider a participant activity survey or document how the initiatives implemented have changed your school community

Step 5: Evaluate and Celebrate

Evaluations help improve and expand plans by looking at how things are going (process evaluation) or how they went (outcome evaluation). Committees need to review how, or if, they met their objectives, and if their activities led to achieving their overall goal. Looking at how you worked together as a team will also give your team insight into how you can improve in the future, and who else might be included. Celebrate the success of school initiatives. Best practices recommend making time to celebrate small successes throughout the entire process.

Grant Guidelines for Secondary Schools:

Secondary schools can apply for a grant up to a $1000.00 to address a health topic within your school.
You must use a Healthy School Approach, which includes the creation of a group/use of an existing group to address the health topic.
The group working on the health topic must have representation from students and staff. It is also encouraged to have representation from parents/guardians and/or community partners.
Preference will be given to projects that demonstrate sustainability (the project/the benefits of the project are able to continue beyond the planned project time frame and benefit future students/staff/school community members) .
Each secondary school will only receive a total of $1000.00 for the 2022/2023 school year.

Applications will be reviewed, and all schools will be notified of their application status by January 9, 2023

The grant money will be provided to schools on January 13, 2023

Support for Focused Schools

Identified Focused Schools provided funding towards Healthy School Initiatives if they commit to collaborating with PHN on a Healthy Schools Approach
Collaborate with schools to assess and prioritize health issues
Recommend best-practices for action i.e., policy, programs
Co-create action plans to address health issues with staff, students, and community
Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of healthy school initiatives. Assistance may include: Evidence, Surveys, Policies, Programs, Training and Facilitation, Curriculum Resources/Consultations, Community Resources and Partnerships.
Consult with Principals and Teachers on guidelines and policies such as:

Safe and Accepting Schools
Equity and Inclusion
Food and Beverage
Daily Physical Activity

Increase parent and family engagement with BCHU programs and services by providing support for:

Reporting Student Vaping and Smoking at High Schools

BCHU uses a progressive discipline approach when dealing with issues related to vaping or smoking on school property. Progressive discipline helps foster positive school climate by combining early and ongoing interventions to promote positive student behaviour.Progressive discipline includes meeting with students and providing counselling for tobacco and vaping cessation.

Smoke Free Ontario Act and Schools
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 prohibits smoking tobacco or cannabis and vaping any substance in certain areas, this includes school buildings or on school grounds including in a vehicle. The schools and the Brant County Health Unit are working together to ensure that the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 is enforced. Section 12(1) of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 outlines what activities are prohibited:

It is illegal to smoke (or hold lit tobacco) or vape in any public or private school:

indoor space
outdoor grounds, including playgrounds
public areas within 20 metres of the perimeter of the school's grounds

It is also illegal to sell or supply tobacco or e-cigarettes to anyone under 19 is prohibited.

Progressive Enforcement Process and Student Support

If a student is found to be vaping or smoking on school property, school officials will email "Witness Reports" to the Health Unit to bothschools@bchu.org. The Witness Report covers two types of occurrences – either smoking/vaping or supplying/selling of vape and tobacco products.
When the form is received at BCHU, a letter will be issued to the parents or guardian of the student. This "Warning Letter" is a first notice.
A School Public Health Nurse (PHN) will receive the witness report. A PHN will contact the student at their school to have a one-on-one consultation to discuss the occurrence, the health implications of vaping/smoking and to explore smoking cessation options. Resources will be provided to support this dialogue.
In the event there is a second/third occurrence for the same student, BCHU will again be notified and Tobacco Enforcement Officer (TEO) will be advised. The TEO will contact school administration and schedule a time to meet the student and a summons will be issued ($365)

Lice Information

Head lice treatment is free for Ontario residents 24 years and under through OHIP. Head lice treatment products are available at no cost for anyone age 24 years or younger who is not covered by a private plan. Families would need a health card number and have to get a prescription.
